Joseph Pilates, born in Germany 1880, pioneered a unique training system which combined mental focus, specific breathing techniques inspired from yoga and the physicality of gymnastics and other sports. In the early 20th century Pilates and his wife founded a studio in New York City and focused heavily on teaching dance performers and ballerinas. Today, their philosophies and principles of breath, concentration, control, centring, precision and flow are still practised.
The beauty of Pilates is it vulnerable to the interpretation of the practitioner and can be adapted to suit the individual. Additionally, mat work Pilates can be done anywhere, at any time! We grow more imbalanced and crooked everyday due to our daily habits and routines, and Pilates provides a workout that will straighten, stretch and strengthen the body. Individuals find it can make a real difference to the quality of their lives by easing shoulder tension, back pain, strengthening core muscles and creating greater postural awareness.
